In letzter Zeit habe ich mich mit Alkoholtinte beschäftigt. Eine Sammlung der kleinen Flaschen habe ich schon seit Längerem – ich bin in der Facebook-Gruppe „Traveling Tangles“ darauf aufmerksam geworden – doch nach den ersten Experimenten bin ich ganz lange nicht darauf zurückgekommen. Ich war mir unsicher, wie ich weitermachen soll – oder vielleicht bin ich einfach abgelenkt worden. Aber inzwischen habe ich schon Einiges zu berichten und zu zeigen.
I have been exploring alcohol ink of late. I have had a collection of the small bottles for quite awhile – I discovered alcohol ink in the Traveling Tangles Facebook Group – but after some initial experimenting I set them aside. I wasn’t sure how to proceed, or maybe I got distracted. But I got them out again about a month ago, and now I have a few things to show and share .
Für Alkoholtinten gibt es ein spezielles Papier, Yupo, das aus Plastik besteht. Auf diesem Papier wirken die Farben einfach prächtig. Auf normalem Papier werden diese Tinten eher nicht benutzt, weil sie ihre speziellen Qualitäten am Besten auf nicht-porösen Oberflächen entwickeln. Es gibt sehr viele Methoden, wie man mit Alkoholtinte arbeiten kann. Man kann sie einfach auf dem Papier tropfen lassen. Das allein macht viel Spaß und führt zu schönen und unvorhersehbaren Ergebnisse. Man kann mit einem in Isopropyl Alkohol getunkten Wattestäbchen durch die Tinte ziehen, oder es auch sprühen – das verdünnt die Tinte und hinterlässt Spuren. Man kann mit Filz stempeln oder auch durch einen Strohhalm darauf blasen. Das sind einige ganz einfachen Techniken, die ich auch ausprobiert habe.
Alcohol inks are usually used with a special plastic paper called „Yupo“. They work beautifully on this paper. When alcohol ink is dropped on normal paper, the paper absorbs it before it can spread (or „bloom“ as it is called), and it dries very dully. It works best on a non-porous surface. There are many techniques for working with alcohol ink. You can just drop it onto the paper. This is so much fun and results in such beautiful and unpredictable results, that there is almost no need to go further. Except of course that one becomes curious. You can use rubbing alcohol to thin and react with the alcohol ink, for example by spraying it or dipping a Q-Tip in it and drawing lines and shapes. You can stamp in the ink with felt, or blow on it through a straw. These are a few of the very simple techniques I have tried.
Aber was macht man eigentlich damit? Das war die Frage, die mich lange blockiert hat. Natürlich wollte ich darauf tanglen, aber ich war mir unsicher, wie ich das angehen soll und ich war außerdem von den Alkholtintenklekse so angetan, dass ich Angst hatte, sie durch meine Probiererei zu ruinieren. Das ist keine produktive Einstellung für einen kreativen Mensch. Aber Gott sei Dank gibt es Youtube, und da habe ich viele Ideen und Anregungen gefunden. Am Besten gefällt mir organische Muster, so dass aus den Alkoholklekserei fantasievolle Pflanzenwelten entstehen.
But where to go from here? This was the question that had me blocked for quite some time. Of course I intended to tangle on it, but I felt unsure of how to proceed. I loved the way the alcohol ink splatterings turned out and was afraid to ruin them by a poor choice of tangles. This is not a productive state of mind for a creative person to be stuck in. Luckily, Youtube came to the rescue! I found a lot of ideas and inspiration there. I liked organic and flower-like tangles the most, which turned the alcohol ink blooms into curious and wild plant worlds.
Was ich auch aus Youtube gelernt habe – man kann Alkoholtinte auf anderen Oberflächen auch gut benutzen. Yupo Papier ist sehr teuer, also war ich daran sehr interessiert. Eine gut Alternative ist Photopapier, das man z.B. für den Drucker verwendet. Man kann entweder die glänzende Seite oder die Rückseite nehmen. Die Tinte verhält sich allerdings jeweils unterschiedlich. Auf der Vorderseite verbreitet sie sich nicht wirklich gut aus; bildet allerdings interessante Ränder und die Farbe trocknet total intensiv und glänzend:
On Youtube, I also learned that alcohol ink can be used on various substrates besides Yupo paper. Since Yupo paper is quite expensive, this is good news. One very good alternative is photo paper, the kind you buy for a printer. You can use either the front, glossy side of the paper or the back. The ink will behave somewhat differently on each side. If you use the front, the ink does not spread or have much of a bloom. However, it forms interesting edges and remains very intense and glossy once it has dried:
Auf der Rückseite des Photopapiers breitet sich die Tinte groß aus, ähnlich zu Yupo. Allerdings trocknet es etwas matter als bei Yupo. Das ist nicht schlimm, man sollte es aber wissen. Es kann aber auch an die Marke oder Art des Photopapiers liegen.
If you use the back surface, the alcohol ink will bloom nicely, but – at least on my photo paper – when it dries it tends to be on the matte side. This is not a problem for me, but I want to have mentioned it.
Übrigens, für Yupo und Photopapaier habe ich Microperm Stifte von Sakura benutzt. Ich glaube, der Profipen von edding funktioniert auch. Aber die Pigmas verwischen auf dieser Oberfläche.
By the way, I used Microperm pens from Sakura to tangle on these surfaces. The edding Profipen also works, but the Pigma Microns smear.
Eine weitere Oberfläche, die man für Alkoholtinte benutzen kann habe ich per Zufall entdeckt. Eine meiner Kursteilnehmer kam direkt vom Boesner in den Kurs und zeigte mir einige interessante Papiere, die sie dort entdeckt hatte. Eins davon war ein Papier, das aus Stein gemacht wird und sich dann auch konsequenterweise „Steinpapier“ nennt. Ich war so neugierig, dass sie mir ein paar Bögen geschenkt hat (danke liebe Heike!). Und als ich mit der Alkoholtinte angefangen habe, fiel mir dieses Papier in die Hand. Ich habe es ausprobiert und finde, es funktioniert hervorragend. Die Tinte trocknet zwar etwas matt, aber dafür breitet sie sich wirklich toll aus.
I discovered another good substrate for alchol ink by coincidence. One of my workshop participants came to a workshop straight from the local art supply store, where she had purchased a number of interesting papers. One of them was called „Steinpapier“ – literally „stone paper“ – and it is, apparently, really made from stone (as the name implies). I was so curious about this that she promptly gave me a few sheets (thanks again, Heike!). And when I started to experiment with alcohol ink, I picked up this paper and gave it a try. It works very well in my opinion. The ink dulls down a bit when dry, but it spreads wonderfully.
Und auf diesem Papier kann man nicht nur mit den üblichen Stiften (also Micron Pigma) tangeln – man kann auch ganz gut mit dem Bleistift darauf schattieren. Ich glaube kaum, dass das auf Photopapier und Yupo geht. (Ich habe es allerdings nicht probiert….)
Not only can you use your normal tangling pens (such as the Micron Pigma) on stone paper, you can also add shading with the pencil! I don’t think you can do that on photo paper or Yupo (… although I have to admit I haven’t tried it).
Was auch funktioniert ist Transparent- oder Pergamentpapier.
You can also use parchment or transparent paper.
Bei Alkoholtinte bin ich noch mitten drin. Ich hoffe, ich kann bald mehr zeigen – vor allem, mehr getangelte Stücke. Es macht auf allen Fällen viel Spaß. Wenn ihr Lust verspürt, es zu versuchen, kann ich es wirklich nur empfehlen.
